Privacy Research Engineers are key roles for ensuring that an organization maintains stringent privacy standards, including in its data collection, algorithms, products, and services. Such a professional specializes in designing and implementing the technology that safeguards user data, confidential training data, restricted inference data, and privacy. They play a critical role in developing and integrating privacy features into various software and applications.
Example tasks
Design privacy-preserving machine learning algorithms.
Improve the assurance of privacy in AI models.
Analyze the balance between model performance and data privacy.
Contribute to the establishment of privacy standards and recommendations for the development and implementation of AI systems.
Break ground in zero-knowledge proofs of new properties, or even zero-knowledge machine learning.
Conduct research aimed at addressing the unintended impacts of AI and machine learning on privacy.

Privacy Engineers, when working at leading AI companies, play a pivotal role in implementing measures that protect AI systems, their users, and the subjects of their training data from potential threats, vulnerabilities, and unintended consequences that could have catastrophic consequences. By designing and implementing robust security and privacy measures, they help prevent unauthorized data exfiltration, data access, data breaches, and some malicious uses of AI technology. Crucially, they also help build systems for privacy-preserving collaborative coordination and privacy-preserving hierarchical surveillance.
