About Successif

At Successif, we want to help create a world in which everyone thrives. We believe that AI poses one of the greatest challenges humanity is facing. Consequently, we are working to build a society in which technologies are safe and benefit all living creatures. We do this by helping professionals motivated by evidence and reason transition to high-impact work. We focus on mid-career and senior professionals to leverage their unique expertise, skills, and experience to address pressing global issues related to technology. Our team adopts a holistic approach focused on cause prioritization, personal fit, and aptitude building. We offer concierge service to senior professionals, collective workshops, one-on-one mentoring, women's leadership workshops, peer support groups, and opportunity-matching.

About the Role

As a Successif advisor, you will accompany inspiring and impact-oriented mid-career and senior professionals throughout their transition journey towards an impactful role, mostly in the AI safety field (technical). This includes regularly meeting with the professionals you’re working with, but also performing numerous other interventions, as best suited to the particular individual’s profile. This may include, among other things, helping the person identify their unique selling points as well as transferable skills, providing guidance and brainstorming on potential sustainable career paths for maximal impact, helping them expand their network, reviewing their resumes and cover letters, and helping them draft research proposals and obtain funding for their projects. In this role, you will report to our incoming COO, a professional with decades of experience running organizations in the private and nonprofit sectors.

Responsibilities

As a career advisor at Successif, you will provide career advising and mentorship to mid-career and senior professionals seeking to transition towards high-impact AI work, particularly in AI technical roles. You will adopt a human-centered approach, helping mentees navigate the uncertainties and difficulties that accompany career transitions. This includes conducting individual advising sessions and regular follow-ups, as well as implementing impactful interventions to assist advisees throughout their career transition path. Additionally, you will contribute to the creation and facilitation of impactful workshops. You will also represent Successif at various conferences and events, helping to build and nurture strong partnerships with AI safety organizations. You will take part in the weekly team meetings to discuss progress of the advising process and future directions. You may also help us create content for our mentees.

Qualifications

We anticipate that this position will be particularly suitable for candidates with a background in AI safety (technical) who are dedicated to empowering others to address the world’s most pressing issues. Our ideal candidate will possess most of the following qualifications and skills:

  • Ability to empathize and genuine willingness to understand and connect with people from diverse backgrounds.

  • A strong understanding of global catastrophic risks.

  • Intellectual curiosity and the ability to translate a career plan into actionable recommendations.

  • Previous experience in the AI safety (technical) field or comprehensive knowledge of it.

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assist advisees in investigating and making decisions, helping them determine the most impactful path among various options.

  • Strong communication and drafting skills, as well as emotional awareness. Many individuals working with Successif experience unique obstacles during their career transitions (such as imposter syndrome, guilt, fear of the unknown, etc.), and our advisors actively seek to help them address these challenges.

  • Possess a creative mind to contribute to the creation and execution of new projects.

  • Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Capacity to thrive while working remotely.

The following qualifications are not required, but will represent an advantage for the candidate:

  • Strong network in the AI safety field.

  • Experience in advising or consulting.

  • Experience with public speaking.

  • Having undergone a career transition yourself.

Preferred Start Date

We are willing to be flexible for the right candidate but would prefer a start date in August 2024.

Job Location

This position is remote and can be based in most countries, although we have a preference for a minimum of 3-hour overlap with Central European Time working hours. The candidate needs to be able to travel at least three times a year for up to 6 consecutive days for work retreats or conferences.

Compensation and benefits

We do not have the exact salary for the position as it will be adjusted based on the candidate’s location.

As an example, for someone working in Vienna, Austria, working 25h per week, the salary would be around 3,250 euros a month.

In rare cases where salary considerations would prevent a candidate from accepting an offer, there may also be some flexibility in compensation. In addition to the salary, benefits associated with the role include health, dental, and vision insurance, an annual wellbeing budget covering gym access and some mental health support, home office set up support, flexible work hours, minimum 8 weeks of parental leave at 100% pay*, and 36 days of paid vacation (including public holidays) or what is compliant with the employment law of your country if it is more than that.

*Exact eligibility depends on national level employment law but we will do our best to honor this regardless of circumstances.
